Islam: A Religion of Mercy that Guides Human Life
Islam as a Religion that Brings Mercy
Islam is the religion revealed by Allah SWT to Prophet Muhammad SAW as a guide for all humankind. The word Islam comes from Arabic, meaning submission, surrender, and obedience to Allah SWT. By practicing the teachings of Islam, a Muslim not only builds a good relationship with Allah (hablum minallah), but also with fellow human beings (hablum minannas).
Allah SWT affirms that Islam is a religion that brings mercy to the entire universe.
"And We have not sent you, [O Muhammad], except as a mercy to the worlds."
QS. Al-Anbiya' (21): 107
Islam teaches compassion, honesty, justice, patience, and care for others without distinction of ethnicity, nationality, or social status.
The Foundations of Islamic Teachings
Islam has three main foundations, namely:
1. Aqidah
Aqidah is a firm belief in Allah SWT and all the articles of faith, namely:
Belief in Allah
Belief in the angels
Belief in the books of Allah
Belief in the messengers
Belief in the Last Day
Belief in divine decree (qada and qadar)
Allah says:
"O you who have believed, believe in Allah and His Messenger and the Book that He sent down upon His Messenger and the Scripture which He sent down before."
QS. An-Nisa' (4): 136
2. Sharia
Sharia is the system of life that Allah has established so that human beings may attain happiness in this world and the hereafter. Sharia includes worship, transactions, marriage, economics, and social ethics.
Allah SWT says:
"Then We put you, [O Muhammad], on an ordained way concerning the matter [of religion]; so follow it."
QS. Al-Jasiyah (45): 18
3. Akhlak
Akhlak is a reflection of a person's faith. The Prophet Muhammad SAW was sent to perfect human character.
The Prophet SAW said:
"Indeed, I was sent only to perfect noble character."
HR. Ahmad (No. 8952)
Good character includes:
Honesty
Trustworthiness
Patience
Generosity
Humility
Keeping promises
Respecting parents
Showing compassion to others
The Five Pillars of Islam
Islam is built upon five matters, as stated by the Prophet SAW:
"Islam is built upon five: testifying that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, establishing prayer, giving zakat, fasting in the month of Ramadan, and performing Hajj to the House for those who are able to do so."
HR. Al-Bukhari No. 8 and Muslim No. 16
These five pillars form the main foundation of a Muslim's life.
The Six Pillars of Faith
The Prophet SAW explained in the Hadith of Jibril:
"Faith is that you believe in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, the Last Day, and that you believe in divine decree, both its good and its bad."
HR. Muslim No. 8
The pillars of faith are the basis of belief that every Muslim must hold.
The Qur'an as a Guide for Life
The Qur'an is the holy book of Muslims and serves as guidance in all aspects of life.
Allah SWT says:
"This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those conscious of Allah."
QS. Al-Baqarah (2): 2
Reading, understanding, and practicing the Qur'an is an obligation for every Muslim.
The Prophet SAW said:
"The best among you are those who learn the Qur'an and teach it."
HR. Al-Bukhari No. 5027
The Importance of Prayer
Prayer is the pillar of religion and the most important act of worship after the declaration of faith.
Allah SWT says:
"Establish prayer, for prayer restrains from shameful and unjust deeds."
QS. Al-'Ankabut (29): 45
The Prophet SAW also said:
"The first deed for which a person will be brought to account on the Day of Resurrection is prayer."
HR. Abu Dawud No. 864, At-Tirmidhi No. 413
Prayer connects a servant with his Lord and becomes a source of inner peace.
The Importance of Seeking Knowledge
Islam strongly encourages its followers to seek knowledge.
Allah SWT says:
"And say, 'My Lord, increase me in knowledge.'"
QS. Taha (20): 114
The Prophet SAW said:
"Seeking knowledge is obligatory upon every Muslim."
HR. Ibn Majah No. 224
Through knowledge, a Muslim is able to distinguish between right and wrong and to practice the religion properly.
Islam Teaches Compassion
Compassion is one of the core values in Islam.
The Prophet SAW said:
"Those who are merciful will be shown mercy by the Most Merciful. Show mercy to those on earth, and the One above the heavens will show mercy to you."
HR. Abu Dawud No. 4941 and At-Tirmidhi No. 1924
Therefore, Islam teaches us to:
Help those in need.
Maintain ties of kinship.
Respect neighbors.
Show affection to children.
Be kind to parents.
Act justly toward everyone.
The Virtue of Taqwa
The main goal of a Muslim's life is to become a person of taqwa.
Allah SWT says:
"Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you."
QS. Al-Hujurat (49): 13
Taqwa is realized by obeying Allah's commands, avoiding His prohibitions, and increasing righteous deeds.
Conclusion
Islam is a perfect religion that regulates the relationship between human beings and Allah, between human beings themselves, and between humanity and the universe. By making the Qur'an and the Sunnah of the Prophet SAW the guide of life, a Muslim will attain inner peace, happiness in this world, and salvation in the hereafter.
May Allah SWT grant us steadfastness in faith, improve our character, increase our righteous deeds, and make us among His righteous servants.
"This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion."
QS. Al-Ma'idah (5): 3
Closing Prayer:
"O Allah, grant us good in this world and good in the hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire."
QS. Al-Baqarah (2): 201
